Corporal Punishment: Does Informing Parents of the Side Effects of Corporal Punishment Lessen Their Use or Belief in it?

Through history, of the United States of America, corporal punishment has been an integrated part of how parents discipline their children (Greven, 1991). While, in this modern day and age, all but one of the countries in Europe have made laws against corporal punishment in schools and over half of all countries in Europe have made laws against corporal punishment both in schools and in the home, 94% of American parents still spank their children before the age of 3 or 4 years (Straus & Stewart, 1999). Bringing forth the question of whether or not this has to do with what sort of information the parents in the United States are getting when it comes to parenting and discipline.
